Parents with babies receiving specialist care at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals now have access to improved accommodation, following a major refurbishment of six family rooms on the neonatal ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
The enhancements are aimed at providing a more comfortable and supportive environment for families whose babies are born prematurely or require extra medical attention. Recognising the emotional strain faced by parents and carers in these situations, the hospital has prioritised the creation of modern, tranquil spaces that allow families to remain close to their newborns throughout their time on the unit.
Five rooms now feature larger beds, extra seating and enhanced storage, complemented by soothing wall art and adjustable ceiling lights that can create a calming atmosphere or be tailored to support night-time feeds and bonding moments. The refurbished spaces offer increased privacy and convenience, with nearby access to kitchen and toilet facilities. Contributions from DBTH Charity have further improved the rooms with soft furnishings and a microwave, adding practical and homely touches.
A sixth room offers a fully self-contained option, including a kitchenette, en-suite shower and toilet, and recliner chairs for extra sleeping space, making it suitable for families anticipating longer stays.
Allocation of rooms is based on each family’s needs, ensuring those requiring additional support can benefit from the improved facilities. Meanwhile, Bassetlaw Hospital is also updating its family accommodation, with a new en-suite room and kitchenette set to open shortly.
Laura Churm, Divisional Lead Nurse for Paediatrics, highlighted the positive impact: "These rooms allow parents and carers to be close to their babies and be part of those precious moments, from feeding and bonding to simply being together."
Feedback from parents has underlined the value of the new accommodation, with one stating it provided "much needed rest at appropriate times," while another described the comfort and peace of mind brought by being able to stay close to their baby.
